THE MAGICAL PHOTOGRAPHY OF DIANE ARBUS

THE COUPLE
HARPER'S BAZAAR 1964
DIANE ARBUS

"So surpassing was the love between Valerie and Antoine that one evening during their vacation at a small beach in Brittany they comingled and their two bodies fused into one. It appears that nature is conformist even in her vagaries, for, in this straight communion, it was Antoine's sex and physical appearance that prevailed, with a slight narrowing through the shoulders and a barely perceptible softening of the facial features. One might attribute this eclipse of the feminine (in its purely external aspects) to the fact that the women and young girls of today feel more or less profoundly - even in matters of love - the need to emulate men; Valerie was no exception to the rule"
